Would You Like To Know More About Dog Breeds?
Each year, more and more new dog breeds are added to the already growing list. Currently, the American Kennel Club, or AKC, recognizes over 150 different breeds and has seven different groups to categorize them. These groups include; sporting, working, toy, terrier, hound, herding, and non-sporting breeds.
The working category of breeds refers to those canines who aren’t merely pets or companions for humans, but rather are working animals that are now or have been trained to perform certain tasks. The working breed category includes: border collie, boxer, german shepherd, great dane, labrador retriever, rottweiler, st. Bernard, siberian husky.
Terriers are a lively group of dogs that were originally bred for hunting small animals such as rabbits and foxes, with most types coming from the British Isles. This category includes some well known dog breeds such as: american pit bull, australian, boston, bull, cairn, fox, jack russell, rat, scottish, welsh, west highland.
Also called teacup or tiny, the Toy category features the smallest of dogs who generally weigh under 20 to 25 pounds and include: Bichon Frise, Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, Chihuahua, Dachshund, Havanese, Maltese, Papillon, Pekingese, Pomeranian, Pug, Shih Tzu, Toy and Miniature, Poodles, Yorkshire Terrier.
There are also categories that use other criteria to describe dogs, such as those that are considered hypoallergenic or non-shedding. Some of these include: Airedale, Basenji, Cairn, Kerry Blue, Norfolk, Tibetan, and Welsh Terriers; Chinese Crested, Poodle, Schnauzer
A growing number of ‘designer dogs’ that mix certain breeds are becoming popular. These include many dogs that are part Poodle:
- Labradoodle (Labrador and Poodle)
- Cockapoo (Cocker Spaniel and Poodle)
- Goldendoodle (Golden Retriever and Poodle)
- Maltipoo (Maltese and Poodle)
- Schnoodle (Schnauzer and Poodle)
Dog breeds may also be grouped by the size and weight of the dog.
- Toy breeds are 10 pounds or less.
- Small breeds are 10 to 25 pounds.
- Medium breeds are 25 to 50 pounds.
- Large breeds are 50 to 75 pounds.
- Extra large breeds are over 75 pounds.
While any dog can be trained to be good around children and toddlers, there are those who seem to have an extra affinity and tolerance for kids. And of course, any dog who is not trained or poorly socialized will not do well with children. Some of the breeds known for being good for families with children include:
- Basset Hound
- Bulldog
- Collie
- English Setter
- Golden Retriever
- Newfoundland
- Samoyed
- Standard Poodle
How to Choose the Right Dog Breed for You
There are many different variables to consider when trying to decide on the right breed of dog for you and your family. Before trying to pick which type of dog would do best in your home, ask yourself the following questions:
Training: All dogs require some type of obedience training and house training, but some need a bit more work than others. Do you have the time and patience necessary to train certain types of dogs?
Size: Do you have the room in your home and yard to accommodate a dog, and if so, what size?
Exercise/walking requirements: Do you have the time and energy it takes to see that a dog has the proper amount of exercise they need to stay happy and healthy?
Grooming and shedding: Is anyone in your home allergic to animals? Do you have the resources and time to devote to grooming your dog on a regular basis?

What is the Miniature Shar Pei Club of America? Why do members think there is no such thing as a MINI PEI?
The Miniature Shar Pei Club of America is the club body that registeres and sanctions the breeding and showing of purebred Miniature and Toy shar pei. These dogs are PUREBREDS and have no other blood but that of the Chinese Shar Pei orignally imported to this country. BEFORE the Shar Pei went AKC this common size variation showed and won alongside their larger cousins. TO BE a registered Miniature Shar Pei that can show and win in the ring the dog must be 17″ Or less in height. It is a FANTASY that there is no such breed. Dogs from AKC dogs that are small may very well be poor quaity animals. But those bred and raised by quality MSPCA breeders are as good as any standard Shar Pei. Their is also a website for this breed club. I saw an answer to WHAT IS A MINIATURE SHAR PEI that suggested no such animal existed. The resolved answers were not knowledgeable. Please do your reaseach www.MSPCA.net
First I must say that the correct plural of Shar-Pei is Shar-Pei~ never Peis as some unfamiliar with this breed have listed on here. To say “Peis” is akin to saying “fishes”~ Pei is always Pei whether speaking of 1 mini Pei or 5 mini Pei. If I had a serious question about either I am not sure I would take the advice of someone informing me about “fishes” or “Peis”
Okay for all those out there that would like some correct answers about the a minature Shar Pei and what exactly the AKC’s role is, here is a bit of educated info for you,
ALL PUREBRED breeds recognized by AKC were first founded by BREED CLUBS such as the CSPCA (Chinese Shar Pei Club of America) for twenty years Shar Pei were NOT AKC RECOGNIZED. Yet they showed and had a stud book and had Championships and clubs. AKC does not create dog breeds. They keep records once they own the stud books and incorporate the breeds which they usually do after a breed club is big enough ….. The MSPCA uses all AKC sanctioned processes to put on shows and record dogs, litters and Championships in it’s own registry.
Whether they become AKC or not has nothing to do with whether or not they are a breed or purebred. AKC does not create dog breeds…breeders do. They buy stud books and take over that process once a dog breed is recognized. . The MSPCA have an organized parent club, Code of Ethics, a registry and ARE A BREED CLUB. Championships can be earned and they are purebred.
They do not compare in any way with Labradoodles but hey…one day those could be in an AKC ring if breeders keep the right records and the breed becomes big enough. BREEDERS create dog breeds. Dog breeds are man made. Every one of them.
A mini Pei is a smaller sized Pei that is created by downsizing only healthy, quality and complimentary versions of the standard Pei. No good breeder would repoduce a sickly or subpar Pei ~ this is where ethics and reputation come in. The smaller gene is a recessive one such as the blue in the blue Pei. Taking two healthy quality lines of the smaller Pei and breeding produce a smaller Pei. The smaller Pei is often times more suited for apartment lifestyles, life on the road (such as truck drivers who prefer a companion) and families with children tend to desire a Pei who is not large enough to knock a child down when playing. These are just a few examples of why this breed was downsized and continues to be a popular choice as a family pet. Finding a pet that fits your lifestyle and is better suited to life changing situations such as moving from a home to an apartment is one of the keys to resolving the huge rate of turnover in pets. Too many people view pets as disposible commodities especially when the puppy grows up into a larger dog. So the mini Pei does have it’s definite pros and bonuses. It was created out of demand and need. Miniature Shar-Pei as well as toy Shar-Pei can both be registered with the AKC they must however show and compete in the Mini ring with the MSPCA at this time~ however when competing for time on your couch for a little love they often times win the show!
In response to the edit above on fishes and fish “fish” is the plural form when concerning the same species of fish. “Fishes” is correctly used when concerning different species of fish. “The fishes we are studying are trout and clown.” ~ No need to consult the dictionary I know this I am a homeschool teacher and my children are bilingual. I don’t consult on something unless I know my info. My husband’s second language is English, he doesn’t have an attitude with constructive criticism or knowledge.
I think people have a hard time accepting new knowledge. About the mini Shar Pei and there being no such thing most of the people responding do not own nor breed the Pei. Nor have they done the research in the line. Miniature Shar Pei are a classification of Pei. Don’t just take my word for it but educate yourself check with other Shar Pei breeders ask them if the miniature Shar Pei exists, ask them if the gene is in some of the lines.
My Boxer Dog, Fatboy! June 2009!
Anyone who has owned a dog understands the importance of advanced Dog Training, and that it is an often overlooked (but very important) aspect of responsible pet ownership. Obedience Dog Training Techniques lay the foundation for a well behaved and well adjusted dog. And don’t we all want a pet who has no trouble participating in family life, and is equally at ease when strangers are around! For centuries, the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel (a namesake of King Charles II of Britain) has been posing and recorded in paintings and tapestries together with their aristocratic families. It is obvious from these works of art that Cavaliers were a luxury item and lived “the easy life” as house pets. Though they have been used successfully for shooting small game, a Cavalier King Spaniel’s true purpose has always been that of companion.
