7 Tips To Stop Dog Barking Before It Stops You

Do you want to stop dog barking and don’t know where to start?  Remember that barking doesn’t bother the dog at all.  In fact, some dogs seem to find pleasure in barking.  There are two main methods to stop the noise.  The first is to try to deal with the cause of the barking and work on that.  The other is to forget all that and bring in some dog barking devices.  Here are tips for getting some quiet again.

Tip 1:  Watch the noise maker for clues.

You’re looking for clues for what causes the noise to get going.  Dogs bark for all kinds of reasons… or even for no reason at all.  Many times boredom is the problem.  A dog that spends much time penned up may just need some exercise and something to do.  Just a change in routine can do the trick.

Tip 2: Run, run, run…

Speaking of exercise… many dog breeds are extremely high energy.  Without some serious work, all that pent-up energy comes out as… noise.  Find a way to let the dog work more and you find the way to stop the noise.

Tip 3:  Only the lonely…

Like boredom, loneliness can cause noise too.  Help here may be as simple as moving the dog in a position where he’s not so isolated.  Dogs are very social creatures and that isolation may be expressed by barking.  Include the dog in your life more and the quiet may return.

Tip 4: Blasting is only fair.

Fight noise with noise.  This might even work on the neighbor barking dog.  Get an ultrasonic sound blaster.  When the barking starts, a sensor detects the noise and blasts back a powerful ultrasonic racket.  You can’t hear it, but it’s pain to a dog.  Many dogs will hush to stop the pain.

Tip 5: Then there’s the blasting collar.

That’s the collar that the barker wears.  Barking gets met by that painful ultrasonic blast.  You don’t hear it, the dog gets an ear full.  Most dogs stop barking as long as the collar’s on.  Of course, all barking isn’t bad and this stops the OK barking as well as the excess barking.

Tip 6: Shocking.

How would you like to receive an electrical shock if you barked?  Not me…  This stops most dogs from barking.  But many dogs that get shocked go a little bit nuts.  Can’t say that I blame them.  This is a rough way to go.  Dogs don’t like it and I don’t either.

Tip 7:  Then there’s the oil solution.

That’s citronella oil.  The dog barks, it gets a squirt of oil to the face.  It’s not harmful, just very irritating and stinky too.  This works for most dogs.  It’s not pleasant, but nobody really gets hurt either.  This is a highly rated solution.

The best way to stop dog barking is to try to work on the real cause.  Maybe then you won’t need any kind of devices or gadgets.  If you do need more help, look at the ultrasonic bark control or a citronella collar.

Dog Barking – Serious answers only please?

Hi There

I work in the care sector and we have a resident who keeps a dog, the dog keeps barking and this annoys other residents in the complex.

The dog truly is all the woman has in her life and we dont want to have to force her to part with it.

Does anyone know of any good devices or techniwues to stop the barking, the dog is non aggressive, it just barks constantly.

Hi. You do have a problem on your hands, don’t you? I think that you accept that the woman needs her dog but you also accept that it annoys other people.

Shall we take it out of the ‘care sector’ for a start and see how we would deal with it in an ordinary residential situation?

First of all, let us consider the dog. If the bark is monotone, single and about once every second, then the dog is bored and trying to drum up some interest in his/her life. Although this is neglect for the well-being of the animal, it is unlikely that a body like the RSPCA would take legal action against the owner. The owner needs training and not the dog! If the bark is erratic and excited then is it happening when someone approaches the property? If so, then the dog is doing his/her job and simply protecting his/her master/mistress.

At this point, let us go back in to the ‘care sector’ and evaluate if ‘other residents’ are actually deliberatly annoying the dog and making it bark – certainly worth considering, especially if the ‘care sector’ that you are in is mental health.

I do believe that there are collars around that will stop a dog from barking but that doesn’t really solve the problem, does it? The owner of the dog needs to be trained to take responsibility for the dog and other residents need to be trained to take responsibility for their actions.

I really think that the dog is simply bored and that a good run would do it the world of good – and it needs to be done on a regular basis. Can I suggest that either you or one of your co-care workers takes the woman in question and her dog out for a lovely walk every day. Healthy for both and should sort out the problem. If the dog is obedient, then taking it to an open area and letting it have a good run off the lead should improve its wellbeing – and the wellbeing of its owner as well as other residents!
