How to get my dog to trust again?

Hiya, i have a 2year old pomeranian male. When he was 6months old two thieving scum bags walked into my kitchen while i was nursing my ill children in the living room and stole my dog. During his ordeal he was kicked, punched and beaten before being sold on to a woman with a young son. Luckily we got him back. Although he is fantastic with us and our immediate family, he has massive trust issues with men. It used to be that he didnt like men in hoods or baseball caps. We recently went away and left him with a friend of mine only to be told he had bitten her husband. He is great with women and loves children to bits, but how do we get him to trust men outside of the family? Xx

Just by slowly bringing strange (to him) men into the house. Bring one male friend into the house (after explaining the situation) and ask that they not touch or talk to your dog. Ask them not to even look at him. Do this with the same friend until your dog becomes comfortable with his presence.

Then find a really tasty treat for your friend to give him. ONLY this friend can give him this treat. Keep doing this until your dog is comfortable with the friend. You will have to be the judge of when he can touch your pup. Go slowly. Eventually, he will see this friend as no threat and the provider of tasty things he can’t get anywhere else.

Do this with 2 or 3 friends all one at a time. Don’t bring friend # 2 around until he is comfortable with friend #1. And once friend # 2 comes over the first time, don’t have friend #1 back over. Rack up 3 or 4 friends he is comfortable with, then begin having those friends come over in a random order. Now it won’t be the same friend every time, but a rotation of friends he already knows.

Then have them over in pairs. Change up the routine until he is comfortable with all 4 friends being over at once. Then you can start bringing in new friends.

Make sure, through this entire thing and preferably for a long time afterwards, the men keep a steady supply of the tasty treat flowing in your pup’s direction.

I used this method on 4 dogs and it worked every time. It is a LONG process, but a very thorough one and it does not place a whole lot of stress on a dog.
