Couple of questions?

1. What were mastiffs originally bred for? Yesterday I watched a show that said they were bred for bull fighting/Dog Fighting. I thought that was pit bulls.

2.In the AKC standards, what is the difference between a watch dog and a gaurd dog? Some breeds on my AKC poster are listed as gaurd dogs, and some as watch dogs.

3. What were boxers originally bred to hunt?

Mastiffs are the base for a lot of breeds today – they date back to Roman times, where they were used in fighting. Humans using dogs to fight is definitely not limited to pit bulls. Bulldogs, Boxers, Dogue de Bordeaux… many of the “molosser” and “bully” breeds were originally bred for bloodsports. The twisted ability of humans to be entertained by the violence and death of animals under their control is widespread.

It seems that the main difference – at least from what I see on the AKC site – is that “watchdogs” are smaller and are meant to alert their humans when something is amiss (Schipperke, Sheltie, Havanese, Shiba Inu, etc.), whereas “guard dogs” have the weight to back up the warning with defense (Boxer, Anatolian, Bouvier, Neopolitan, etc.)

Boxers were originally bred to hunt bull, boar, and bear – the undershot jaw allowed them to get a grip on the prey and hold it until the hunter arrived. http://americanboxerclub.org/unique.html
