Dog Chewing Problems – My One Year Old Dog Cannot Stop Chewing

Perhaps this is your dog. At one year old, she cannot seem to stop chewing things. She has toys, and chews them up soon after she is given them. You give her dog bones, but she eats them and sits waiting for the next one, it does not solve the problem she has. If you carry on giving her things while you do not know why she is chewing, it is just throwing money away.

Besides the money you spend on toys, there is the danger she might swallow bits of the toys. How will you know if she does swallow something small, as you cannot watch her all the time? It really is dangerous to allow her to continue chewing.

Some dogs chew objects around the house. such as towels, curtains, table legs, chair legs, and furniture. These are a few examples. If your dog has this problem, the damage to your property can be quite destructive, and expensive to replace.

So what might be the cause of the dog wanting to chew everything in site?

Does your dog spend enough time outside, or is she an Inside Dog? A dog chewing as much as this is meant spend more time outside, and is probably just bored through lack of exercise. So give her more exercise if she is not getting enough now. Make sure she gets a run as part of that exercise program. .

Try throwing a ball, she will enjoy running for that. If you are not able to take her for exercise yourself, perhaps a neighbor with more time might be able to help. There are always ways around these problems.

Another alternative is to teach her some new tricks.

Toys for dogs that chew?

I have a small dog (20 lbs beagle-terrier mix) but she can destroy toys better than any big dog I’ve ever seen. She pulls all the fuzz off tennis balls before tearing them in half, nibbles and pulls ropes in half, and fabric squeakers don’t stand a chance. I borrowed a Kong from my parents (and their rottweiler) but she didn’t have much interest in something that large. Most “indestructible” chew toys seem to be made for large dogs. Is there anything that’s durable and appropriate for a small dog?

Get her a smaller sized kong. Nylabones work great too.
