Help! I’m looking for a children’s book I read as a kid, but can’t remember the title or author.?

The book was pretty big, I remember it was hard for me to hold. I remember that it was in color, and had a fuzzy type of look to it, like watercolor, or old digital. It was sometime in the nintys. It had a man, which I can’t remember if he was a scientist or not, but I vaguely remember a white lab coat, and he had a golden colored dog. The book was filled with puzzels, and I remember one you had to lift the book to a mirror to read the writings. I think the cover might have had a staircase on it. If anyone could please help me out, it’s bothering me soo much, and I want to find this book!
