How come my dog never has any reaction to chocolate?
I’ve heard EVERYWHERE that chocolate is deadly to dogs. But my Cocker Spaniel has eaten stray M&M’S, pieces of chocolate chip cookies, and he even got a hold of an entire chocolate Santa at Christmas. He has never gotten sick once. Is it only certain breeds/dogs that are deathly allergic to chocolate, or has my dog just been lucky?

The theobromine in chocolate is toxic to dogs, cats, birds, horses and other animals.
The animals have a different detoxification system and they therefore do not metabolize the theobromine as quickly as humans. This causes a build up of theobromine and toxicity. The toxicicty causes heart arrhythmias (irregular heartbeats) which can very often be fatal.
Whether or not an animal or a human survives an arrhythmia is a gamble. You just never know when an irregular heart beat will result in death. In humans, that is why they install pacemakers in people with continual irregular heartbeats.
The build up of theobromine can also damage the liver and kidneys over time, even if an irregular heartbeat doesn’t kill the dog first.
