Is It Right To Walk Our Dogs So Much? Cesar Milan Vs Jan Fennell
There are many different techniques to train a dog but which is the most effective method? I am a dog trainer working in Cornwall with years of experience behind me.
Jan Fennell’s method was discovered by observing wolves in the wild and then mimicking their body language in the domestic situation as a means of communicating with canines in a language they understand.
It is a gentle, kind, yet strangely controversial method which has had its critics in a rage. Why? Because it is different and many people are threatened by change.
One of Jan’s points is that dogs do not have to be walked all the time and you should only take them when you feel happy and the dog is ready. I strongly agree with her, mind you the first time I heard that I thought she was mad and you may to.

But why do people think we must walk our dog’s daily? The concept of dog walking has many potential starting points King Charles, Victorian promenades, the Blitz, more leisure time and so on, but since when have we been told that it is necessary? We have owned dogs for thousands of years without walking them and we did not have any problems then.
Cesar Milan recommends walking dogs twice a day when they are agitated, hyperactive or aggressive in order to calm them down. For me walking your dog constantly when he is agitated, aggressive or hyperactive merely serves to tire the dog out for the day. However tomorrow is another day and behavioural problems are still be there.
Wrong advice with walking our dogs will be potentially damaging, especially when explained to the masses. Cesar Milan has dealt with this problem by adding a disclaimer at the beginning of his programme suggesting that you should not try any of the methods that you have seen.
I appreciate the need to cover your back, but if you cannot practice the techniques then what is the point? Imagine Jamie Oliver advising you not to try cooking his food at home.
So we have two experts completely contradicting each other. No wonder there is confusion concerning this issue, but who is right? Will our dogs implode if they do not get a walk or are many of us potentially damaging them by taking our dogs out when they are not ready?
