In the dog training world, there are a variety of philosophies and training techniques. Dog trainers have differing views and while everyone agrees that dogs do need to be trained, many disagree on how to actually achieve it. Trainers often have very strong views and become so passionate about them that they insist their methods are the only way. The truth is that there is not one correct method.

Whether you hire a trainer to train your dog or you decide to do it yourself, you need to be aware that there are different philosophies and tools of dog training. There are areas that focus on motivation and positive reinforcement that utilize the use of clickers, treats, toys, verbal praise, and other rewards. On the other hand, correction techniques focus on punishment and correcting behavior. These usually involve a verbal reprimands and use of Dog Training Collars. There are flat leather or nylon buckle, prong, choke, and electric collars. There are those that prescribe to the “pack” or “alpha” theory of behavior with dogs who say the owner must be respected as the pack leader and others who disagree this is the case with domesticated dogs.

When choosing to train your dog, you should consider a few factors. First, you should make sure that the philosophies and methods used in line with your personal values. Know that different techniques will have varying levels of effectiveness depending on the breed and temperament of your dog. It is also important to be aware of whether your dog seems to be happy with the training. Is it enjoying its training? Overall, it should. Finally, any methods used should be effective.

Good Dog Training books recommendation?

I want to read as many books as possible from different dog trainers/behaviourists to broaden my knowledge. I know lots of people like Culture Clash and the Cesar Millan series. Any other recommendations? Thanks.

Anything at all by Patricia McConnell, Suzanne Clothier, Pat Miller or Ian Dunbar would be an excellent choice. Brenda Aloff’s book “Get Connected With your Dog” would improve anyone’s relationship with their dog. “Purely Positive Training” by Sheila Booth is also a great book.

There’s many out there, some of them are for specific problems – way too many to mention.
