A dog has always been considered as man’s best friend. That is because a dog can provide you and your family the companionship, love and protection that you can get from a human friend, and at times even more. Our pet enjoys playing and running about in open spaces but, unfortunately, not all of our houses provide just the right amount of space for our dogs to play. A dog fence is basically a fence that you set up at your front and backyard to limit your dog to the confines of it. One such alternative are electric dog fences.
An electric dog fence is generally comprised of a wired fence and a collar that would be worn by your dog. The wired fence is generally low, allowing this to be hidden by the grass and bushes around your yard. This is how an electric dog fence works. As your dog runs about the yard wearing the collar that comes in the package, and comes close to the fence, a signal is transmitter to the collar which sends off a beeping sound and produces a mild electric shock to deter your dog from wandering any further. The shock is strong enough to discourage your dog from going anywhere near that particular area, but mild enough that it does not lead to any short-term and long-term damage or injury to your best friend. The concept behind this is that with each shock given by the electric dog fence, your pet eventually is trained to only stay within a certain area of the property.

Electric fence or shock collar?
We are having a hard time deciding which would work better for us. Here is our situation: We live in a small town a little off of the road w/ 9 acres of land. Our dog, Scooby, is about a year old. Our goal was to let him run free w/ my kids, which was working until about a month ago….he found the road. I do not want to restrict him to a little area to run, so I thought about lining the road w/ an underground fence. However, I am also contemplating a shock collar simply for when he goes near the road. Any thoughts or suggestions would be great. Thanks in advance.
Our dog is medium/large size and my children are 3,4 and 6. I don’t like tying him on the run that we have as it is so dangerous for the kids-they are not allowed near him when he is tied.
My title should have said Invisible Electric Fence or Shock collar. The thought to have a live wire going across my property was never an option.
Personally, I think shock collars aren’t effective, and a little too barbaric. How about a really long leash, so he can be tied to a tree, and still play with the kids?
I hope you find a solution! I know I have 5 acres, ALL of it is fenced for our dogs, but it is quite expensive to do so.
