How can people have compassion for dogs while being so disrespectful to mental illness?

I was reading the answers to the question “Is it wrong to euthanize a Healthy Dog?” I agree with a lot of the points made but find it shocking how people who care so much about animals find it fine to contribute to stigma over mental illness. Some responses included “you should be spayed, take a pill, you need to up your meds, don’t use your bipolar as an excuse, sounds like you are looking for an excuse to be depressed” It seems to me the person was asking a moral question, since she is suffering from a very serious illness that nobody would choose to have. Since she was asking the question, she obviously has a conscience since she sought the of fellow animal lovers. Hopefully when she reads the answers, she will come to the right decision and feel that she received answers from compassionate people. It is puzzling how people can care so much about dogs and then write statements that are insulting to an already stigmatized illness.

I agree with you totally, Samantha. Not just on here, but on other forums people show an amazing lack of understanding about mental illness. Let’s hope they would show more compassion if a member of their family was affected.
