Do You Need A Dog Crate? Read This First

Dogs, like people, enjoy having a space they can call their own. This is possible for them with a dog crate and kennels. It is more common to use a pet crate when your dog is inside the house and to use kennels when your dog is outdoors. If your dog is going to stay outside for long periods of time, and especially if you do not have a fenced in yard, you will need a dog kennel to keep your dog safe and comfortable.

The size of the kennel will depend on how big your dog is, and do not forget to take into consideration (if your dog is not already full grown) how big your dog will eventually get. Most people choose either a wire mesh kennel or a galvanized steel kennel for outdoor use. You have choices for the ground covering ranging from the original dirt in your yard to gravel to a concrete slab. Bear in mind that if your dog likes to dig, they may be able to dig underneath the kennel and escape if you go with dirt or sand. It is also nice to put some kind of a roof over the kennel. A replaceable tarp that you can fasten down is a good choice or you may decide to go with a shingle roof. It will depend on how much money you are willing to spend.

A dog crate and kennels come in various shapes and sizes but a good example of a kennel is the PetSafe Box Kennel and Pen dog kennel for under three hundred dollars. It is easy to assemble and it is designed for safety, convenience and long life. It is made of galvanized steel that offers rust protection and it will also protect your dog from wild animals and stray dogs. A tarp could easily be placed over the top of the kennel. It measures 4 feet high by 7.5 feet wide x 7.5 feet long.

If you will need something large PetSafe offers a kennel that is 6 feet high by 7 feet wide x 12 feet long and it is priced at under four hundred dollars. It has the same great features as the other kennel but it will give your dog more room to stretch their legs.

A dog crate can also come in steel but, in addition, you will find them in wood, canvas and plastic. These work better inside your home and will give your dog a place that they know is their own where they feel safe. They are also good for transporting your dog to vet appointments and for other travel purposes. Many of the wood crates are made to look like a piece of furniture and they can be manufactured to blend in with your décor and even used as an end table. They start at approximately two hundred dollars. The wire pet crate can start at around sixty dollars, as do the canvas crates. Plastic ones start at around forty dollars but, of course, price will depend not only on the size of your dog but also on the features that are important to you.

A dog crate or kennel can be a real advantage to both you and your dog. For outside, they will have an area where they are safe and you can feel confident leaving them knowing they are in a contained area and happy. For inside the house, both you and your dog will be happy knowing they have a place to call their own where they can go and feel warm and comfortable. dog steps

My dog has been pooping in her crate!?

She is a small dog, about 12 lbs. She just had puppies 7 weeks ago but still hasn’t totally dried out, although the puppies are all gone. She has been pooping and peeing in her crate during the day and night. She doesn’t do it if she sleeps in our bed but does if she is in her crate. She has a larger wire crate and a small plastic cage just big enough for her to stand up and turn around in. We never put anything in the bottom because we are afraid she will ruin a blanket or something. My question is why is she doing this and how can we fix it? My ideas were she is still going crazy with pregnancy and nursing hormones or she just isn’t comfortable. She never used to do this but always had a big comforter and wasn’t pregnant.

its because she still has maternal inst incs, she smells the puppies and that crate is her nest. she’s leaving her scent making sure all other dogs (even if there are no other dogs) know that this is her spot and it is not to be intruded upon… if she doesn’t need the whelping box than take it away. that should help.

by the way, a puppy should be 8 to 10 weeks old before they are taken away from its mother…. 7 weeks is too you and the puppies are usually still nursing from the mother and building up their immune systems…..
