Dog friendly attractions in Northumberland
This is the first in our series of articles looking at attractions that allow dogs to accompany their owners. First off we’re looking at Northumberland.
Housesteads Roman Fort
Northeast of Bardon Mill the Fort lies 10 minutes uphill from the visitor car park. It’s the most complete example of a Roman fort in Britain, and is the most popular site on the Roman Wall. Dogs on leads are welcome.
Lindisfarne Priory
Lindisfarne Priory is separated from the mainland by the tide twice a day. It is located on the beautiful Holy Island of Lindisfarne. Dogs on leads are welcome although restrictions apply to certain areas of the site.
Prudhoe Castle
Built between 1100 and 1120 the Castles purpose was to the crossing of the River Tyne against Scottish invaders. You are free to explore the grounds of Prudhoe Castle with your dog.
Warkworth Castle
Dogs on leads are welcome at Warkworth which is south of Alnwick on the A1068. Warkworth Castle is one of the largest, strongest and most impressive fortresses in northern England. Check the English Heritage website for details.
Aydon Castle
Set just outside of Corbridge, Aydon Castle is located in a secluded woodland setting. Dogs are welcome into the Castle and the surrounding woodland provides a great space for walking with the whole family.
Dunstanburgh Castle
Dunstanburgh is north east of Alnwick near Craster and Embleton. Built in the 1300s by Earl Thomas of Lancaster, the castle was thought to be a symbol of his opposition to the King. Dunstanburgh was the focus of fierce fighting during the Wars of the Roses, and was twice besieged. It subsequently fell into decay and its impressive ruins now watch over a headland famous for seabirds. Dogs on leads are welcome.
