Harry Potter question……….?

Do you think that J.K. Rowling researched the meanings of names of the Charicters in her books before using them in her stories?

HARRY is Army Ruler
RON is Counsel rule
HERMIONE is Pillar queen
ALBUS is White
Sirius is Dog Star
Draco is Dragon
Arthur is Bear
BILL is Strong-willed Warrior
Charlie is Free Man
Fred is Peace Ruler
George is Farmer
GINNY is Virginal, Pure
Molly is Sea Of Bitterness
Percy is Rock
JAMES is Supplanter
LILY is Flower

I’m quite sure she did. She has said that she collects names and is interested in meanings in language. She indulges in some wordplay as well. She may not have used the exact meanings you researched– Molly, for example, is an old fashioned nickname for Mary– but gone by other connotations. Lily as a flower has other meanings depending on the type of lily: death, lily-white (purity), lily-livered (cowardly), peace lily, etc. Of course, in this case i suspect she was going for pure as in Lily’s pure love for Harry.

You might also note that most of the men’s names are also the names of British monarchs: George, James, Harry (a nick name for Henry– Shakespeare referrs to King Harry or Hal for Henry), Bill– short for William, as in the current prince and William the Conqueror who came from France (and Bill marries Fleur who is French, and Fleur is the French word for flower; the Fleur de lis is also a lily and the symbol of France and French royalty) and Arthur. Fred is also a royal name, albeit more German– Frederick the Great, for example.

You can have a lot of fun with HP names– first and last. Potters mold and create; you could say Harry is the creator and leader of the army.
