What to look for in a future therapy dog?

I would like to get a dog that with training and bonding could be used as a therapy dog in the group home i work in. I have researched the testing requirements etc but i also know that there are certain traits etc that make a dog more suitable. My question is in applying these to different pups I’m looking at. I know there are puppy personality tests, that a trainer showed me, but i would like more opinions… If I look a either a litter or a single pup, what behaviors are the most favorable for therapy when the pup matures? What breed would I best with? I would like a friendly dog that is not shy. I have a somewhat dominant personality and dont have problems reminding a pup who is the alpha. My dad whom I live with would perfer a smaller dog and I can see the postives in being able to put a small dog on a wheelchair tray or a lap. Any ideas?? I am slightly biased to big dogs, havent met many smaller dogs that arent snippy little wrenches! Any advice would be great!

Temperment. You don’t want a pup that hovers to the back of the litter but you don’t want one that is constantly bullying the other either. The best thing to do is stand calmly and see which pup comes to you first . Have the breeder help in determining the pups temperment also. Much of what determines a good therapy dog comes with later training experiences.
