Gingivitis usually doesn’t cause pain until a very advanced stage, but when it is in its advanced stages, it can mean the damage has reached the bones that hold teeth firmly in their place. It is therefore important to heed the earlier signs of gingivitis in order to minimize the damage. They include:

1. Bleeding. If your gums bleed easily, it can be one of the earliest signs of Gingivitis. A drop of tea tree essential oil on your toothpaste can help prevent gum bleeding and is a great natural antiseptic.

2. Gum color. Red gums or gums that change color can be another early sign of Gingivitis.

3. Swelling gums. A swelling of the gums can be the result of the process of inflammation.

4. Foul breath odor. Gingivitis can cause bad breath due to bacterial activity.

5. Gum pain or soreness. Pain can indicate that Gingivitis is advanced since gum pain is only felt at later stages of Gingivitis.

If you experience any of the above warning signs, a visit to the dentist is strongly advised. Besides dental and oral damage (including bone loss and Periodontal disease), Gingivitis can also lead to a systematic infection when bacteria reaches the blood stream. Healthy gums are an integral part of one’s general health.

Gingivitis doesn’t have to happen. Regular brushing and flossing are often successful in its prevention. Use of an electric toothbrush and a good mouthwash are also helpful additions to one’s cleaning regimen. Regular visits to the dentist where plaque buildup is removed from your teeth are very effective in deterring Gingivitis, and there are other treatments the dentist can use to battle a persistent Gingivitis problem, such as an under-the-gum cleaning. Consult with your dentist regarding the different prevention and treatment techniques, in order to find the right one for you.

Postnatal care of mother dog and puppies?

I don’t think that the puppies are getting enough milk from the mother. How can I supplement the mother so that she produces more milk? What are the warning signs that there may be a problem with mother and puppies health?Need helpful advice, not hateful advice.I rescued this dog and I found out she was pregnant.Im not a dog breeder.Thank you!
The puppies are restless and some cry alot. Can I give her the milk that are in the little cans,I think its called”pet milk”?

The mother needs to be on a high quality puppy food (no by-products, no corn, no wheat, no soy and a named meat in meal form as the first ingredient). A nursing mother will eat up to 3 times her normal amount so make sure she has a constant supply of dry food and water easily accessible. You can increase her fluid intake by giving her low sodium chicken broth.

There are commercial products like PetAlive Lactoll that increase lactation, but will most likely have to be ordered. You can go to a health food grocery store like Wild Oats and they have herbal preparations containing fennel and fenugreek, blessed thistle, etc. that are used to increase milk supply (lactation aids).

The puppies should be weighed twice a day and they should be gaining weight. You don’t say the breed, but food scales are only about $10.00 and have a bowl on top and weigh to about 7 pounds. If they aren’t gaining weight or they are crying a lot than you may need to supplement to meet their demands, but try to get mom producing more first because the less they eat, the less she will make.

Edit: pet’s milk is evaporated milk. It has twice the amount of lactose as cow’s milk when compared on a cup to cup basis. Somes dogs do fine with lactose, but many are lactose intolerant and it will cause diarrhea. I wouldn’t risk this because if it upsets her stomach she will not eat as much, have diarrhea and may even vomit which will only further compound your problem. If the pups are restless and crying you are probably right in assuming they are not getting enough to eat.
